Welcome
The Home Builders Association Of Greater Calhoun County is an organization comprised of business men and women who want to expand their industry and improve their community. Working together, our fine members increase their knowledge of the trade and market with continuing education opportunities and guest speakers. They make new business contacts and fortify professional relationships at group meetings and events. They also pull together to obtain common political goals. In addition, our members have volunteered and contributed to many philanthropic projects in the Greater Calhoun County Area since 1967. We believe there is power in numbers and that business and fellowship go hand in hand.    Click here to Go With A Pro !
ATTENTION: THOSE REBUILDING OR REPAIRING HOMES FROM THE RECENT STORMS
WE AT THE HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF GREATER CALHOUN COUNTY WANT TO EXTEND OUR HEART FELT SYMPATHY TO ALL OF THOSE AFFECTED BY THE RECENT STORMS.  AS WE BEGIN TO RECOVER AND REBUILD, WE WANT YOU TO KNOW WE ARE HERE FOR YOU. UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WILL BE TRYING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF STORM VICTIMS.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself from home fraud:

  • Make sure that your contractor has an occupational license from the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board. (General contractors licenses prior to January 1, 1992 are exempt.) When any work exceeds $10,000.00 in cost the builder must be licensed by the State of Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board.  Ask to see their card!
  • Verify the contractor's name, address, and phone number.
  • Request references on similar work recently performed by the contractor.
  • Obtain 2 or 3 bids.
  • Check with professional associations and licensing boards to verify the worker's record.

Before your contractor begins work, you should:

  • Ask for proof of workman's compensation and liability insurance.
  • Agree on finance charges and make a payment schedule.
  • Make sure you have guarantees and warranties in writing.
  • Agree on start and finish dates and put the dates in writing.
  • Make sure the contract is specific, including details about size, colors, materials, brands and models.

When approached by a contractor, remember that most professionals do not solicit door-to-door, and do not require large payments up front. Here are some lines commonly used by scam artists so DON'T FALL FOR THESE LINES:
  • "I just finished another job in the neighborhood and am trying to get rid of this extra material."
  • "The price I'm quoting is very low because we plan to use your home as a demonstration model."
  • "You will have to pay me in cash since I am giving you such a great deal."
  • "This offer is good today only."
  • "Don't tell anyone else about our deal. I've charged other people a lot more for the same type of work."
  • "I'll have to have all (or half) the money up front."
  • "I will need some additional money to order more supplies before I can finish the job."
  • "The price of these materials will go up tomorrow."

Don't trust your home to just anyone to do your repairs.  Arm yourself with the information necessary to choose the right contractor.  Hiring local, licensed, insured, professionals will help make your rebuilding or repairs much easier.  Use the directory on this web site to find a local professional and may God Bless each of you!
